99% of people reading this will have at least one social media app on their phones. Whether this is Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, LinkedIn, or anything else, you have it on your phone and it is probably one of your most-used apps. Indeed, if you look at the top 10 most downloaded apps of last year, half of them are related to social media in one way or another.
Ironically, for apps that have been downloaded so many times, there are a few glaring bugs or issues that could so easily be improved. We've looked at some of the top social media apps, and here's how we think their designs could be improved:
Better cameras
There's nothing worse than having a phone with an excellent camera and using it to take amazing photos, only for it to turn awful when you open it on a social media app. For whatever reason, app developers dumb down the camera quality and don't let you use your camera to its full potential. As a result, you either have to leave the app, take a photo using your camera app, then go back into the app to use the image, or you use a crappy photo via the app. Either way, it's a pain that can be solved if developers just let you use your camera to its full potential.
Downloadable videos
Ever seen a funny video on Twitter or Facebook and wanted to save it? Unfortunately, you can't do this via mobile apps. You can save images, but videos aren't downloadable. It's pretty damn frustrating as you have to turn on your screen recording software and download the video that way. In fact, as you can see from this VideoBuddy apk download, many developers are now making apps that let you download videos from social media apps. The success of these third-party apps can vary, but wouldn't life be easier if you could simply press on a video and have an option to save it?
Larger multimedia limits
Speaking of videos, isn't it frustrating when you can't upload something that goes beyond a set time limit? Or, you can't upload an image because it's too big. Social media apps set these limits for one reason or another, but they tend to be stupidly small. Why can't they be made with fewer restrictions so you can upload content in the highest quality possible? Discord is a prime example of this. It's sort of a more private form of social media, but you still have communities and people coming together to discuss things. Either way, there's an 8MB upload limit on your files. This is staggeringly low, meaning you have to reduce the quality of all videos and images to improve this. Why can't the app developers change this so the limit is a lot higher than this?!
Overall, most of the development and design issues with social media apps revolve around multimedia. Three instant ways to make these apps a lot better are to improve the in-app camera/video quality, let us download videos from the apps, and increase the multimedia upload limits!
